The
Hacktivismo Declaration
Bombs, Democracy, and Double Standards
On the 4th of July (2002) [Geez, talk about a loaded date! - Editor] Hacktivismo
announced it would release Camera/Shy, a steganography application. Ever since
we've been bombarded by journalists wanting to know, "Could this application
be used by terrorists?" Last year the boogiemen were child pornographers.
Next year they might be extraterrestrials. Who knows?
We know we're in the business of providing technical solutions for democracy
activists, not assisting bomb throwers and weenie wagers. Camera/Shy actively
benefits the democratic experience wherever freedom is under siege. But can
Cisco and the other software titans make the same claim? How are they helping
the democratic franchise by selling censorware to the People's Republic of China?
Or are they allowed because, unlike us, it isn't their business to care about
these things?
And Another Thing
While the so-called leaders of the free world are doing nothing to open up the
Internet, we're doing this with no money and in our spare time. Just think of
what we could do with a budget. Currently our R & D division is running
off an Atari and a Casio keyboard. I can hardly wait until we can afford a copy
of Windows 95.

From
Velocity Nation -
So we end up with a number of ways to finish the revolution that the GNU/Linux
and Open Source people started, and they are - to recap the above text:
- To research knowledge instead of technology, with technology only as a fringe
benefit of the knowledge, and not as a driving force.
- To realize that the revolution itself, is a reaction to capitalist orientations,
and that the same orientations inside the revolution, do not help.
- To point out that Free Speech, and Open Source knowledge archives, is not
equal to forcing Society to read it. However, those who feel they need it or
have an interest in it should always have it accessible.
- To stop following the tune of Society, and doing what the cyber culture as
an individual organ, not as a part of Society, thinks is best. Those with the
knowledge are those who are best at making the choices, although there are equal
opportunities to speak your mind.
I hope that there, on the basis of this essay, can be a sane
and healthy discussion of the future of the cyber revolution, a revolution that
if it succeeds, will do away with conservative thoughts from Society, that will
polish the Open Source idea, and that will strengthen the individuals role in
the group.

There is an important corresponding technical dimension that reinforces hacktivist claims of populist support. Hacktivist DoS attacks must be executed using client side or individual browser based tools. The prototypical Zapatista Floodnet tool, (which other groups have continued to develop) requires downloading and installing a Java applet. Moreover, these tools need to be consciously scheduled and aimed at a specific web address; actions that presumably demonstrate solidarity and commitment. To some hacktivists this distinction is all-important because it differentiates their activities from the nihilistic and anonymous February DDoS attacks on the CNN, Yahoo, and eBay e-commerce sites. During those assaults, allegedly orchestrated by "mafiaboy" and a few other apolitical participants, DoS "zombie" servers were surreptitiously placed on unwary host systems and triggered en masse. In fact, the utility programs used for swarming attacks, rooted in performance art, are far less powerful than hardcore "smurfing" weapons like Trin00, Stachaldraht and TFN2K.
Flood attacks can
be used as a useful form of civil disobedience if used correctly in a *focussed
and organised* way.

I love doing that. I see the hard-disk activity lights flicker as the "disk

Funny how we always start up with lots of free disk.."
